When I say Dominican Republic, you think???

When I say Dominican Republic, you think???

…resorts, beaches, Punta Cana

Let me introduce you to something more!

The Dominican Republic is famous for white sandy beaches and world-class resorts (which are amazing!), but this little island has more hidden gems than I could discover in a lifetime…but believe me, I’m going to experience as many as possible!

Two hours from Punta Cana, you will find the Dominican’s capital city of Santo Domingo (SD). Situated on the Ozama River and the Caribbean Sea, this city is overflowing with Dominican culture, history, nightlife, music and restaurants.

Culture/history

In SD, you will find the first cathedral, castle, monastery, university, and fortress in the Western Hemisphere. All influenced by European Architecture, these sites are gorgeous to visit and photograph.

Nightlife/music

At night, the city lights up from Plaza Espana to Calle El Conde. Calle El Conde is a pedestrian only street that features markets, shops, restaurants, street performers and art. Plaza Espana is one of my favorite spots at night in the city. Lined with beautiful restaurants, you can enjoy dinner with a postcard worthy view.

Malecon

A morning spent walking Malecon is a morning well spent. Malecon is a street that lines the Caribbean Sea and has excellent walking paths with tons of features. Playgrounds, outdoor gyms, waterfront restaurants (Adrian Tropical for breakfast is a must) and Instagram worthy photo spots are abundant.

Restaurants/hotels

The dining options in SD are endless and offer something for everyone. My list of favorites is LONG and keeps growing with every visit. Pat’e Palo, Lulu, La Briciola are a few of my favorites!

The hotels in Santo Domingo make you feel like you stepped back in time. My favorite hotels are located in the colonial zone of the city, they have a colonial feel with boutique quality and service.

Whether you are adding a few nights to the end of your beach vacation in Punta Cana or making Santo Domingo your primary vacation destination, get ready to explore a city that will continuously have you saying “wow”!
